Artist Statement
Art has always been a way for me to cope with life. I love art and trees, and I realize the reason is because those are the two things in my life that cannot change overnight. Growing up poor helped me to be creative with the simplest materials, whether it was making marbles out of dirt and making them shiny by rubbing the dried dirt on our tin roof or pretending I was an architect building my dream house by stacking up papers.
However, being adopted has opened up a whole new way of experiencing art. When I was put with the faces I did not recognize and had to force myself to eat the plain tasteless food, I would then draw or write what I would rather be doing. I expressed my anger and frustration through my writing and daydreamed through painting with colors.
